Bulgaria - Vratsa

Coat of arms of Vratsa
Vratsa (Bulgarian: Враца, also written Vraca) is a city in northwestern Bulgaria, at the foothills of the Balkan Mountains. It is the administrative centre of the homonymous Vratsa Province. The city of Vratsa is picturesque. It is nestled in the foothills of "Vrachanski Balkan" (Vratsa Mountain), with the Leva River calmly crossing the city, and enormous and fearful rocks overhanging the roofs. The city is 116 km away from the national capital Sofia.
Meshchiite's tower
It's situated on a small part of the central square in Vratsa , north-west from it. It's significant concise capacity with large forms is one of the landmarks of the town. It takes three times more space than the Kurtpashov's tower, it's twice higher and has an obvious defending purpose. Its shape is a stone prism with a height of 13 m. In the end of the 19th century the tower was rebuild like a town clock. The ground floor had a storing function and the three floors were used for dwelling places. It's considered that the tower dates back from the 16th century.

Bulgaria - Sofia

Sofia's development as a significant settlement owes much to its central position in the Balkans. It is situated in western Bulgaria, at the northern foot of the Vitosha mountain, in the Sofia Valley that is surrounded by mountains on all sides. The valley has an average altitude of 550 metres (1,800 ft). Three mountain passes lead to the city, which have been key roads since antiquity, connecting the Adriatic Sea and Central Europe with the Black and Aegean Seas. A number of low rivers cross the city, including the Vladaiska and the Perlovska. The Iskar River in its upper course flows near eastern Sofia. The city is known for its 49 mineral and thermal springs. Artificial and dam lakes were built in the twentieth century.
