Smolensk (Russian: Смоленск) is a city and the administrative center of Smolensk Oblast, Russia, located on the Dnieper River, 360 kilometers (220 mi) west-southwest of Moscow.
The Cathedral Church of the Assumption, dominating the city of Smolensk from the lofty Cathedral Hill, has been the principal church of the Smolensk bishopric for 800 years.
Village Velikoretskoye in winter.
This large summer church in Suzdal, dedicated to the feast of the icon depicting Our Lady of Smolensk, was built over a period of eleven years. Thus its sponsors were able to make quite significant alterations in the building's design while it was still under construction. They requested that the exterior of the church be decorated with three large, symmetrically placed windows, using the Church of the Ascension in the St Alexander monastery (1695) as an example. The upper portion of the church, with a cornice of horseshoe-shaped kokoshniks, indented mouldings and balusters, resembles that of the Church of the Emperor Constantine, built in 1707.
