Potsdam is the capital city of the German federal state of Brandenburg. It directly borders the German capital Berlin and is part of theBerlin/Brandenburg Metropolitan Region. It is situated on the River Havel, 24 kilometres (15 miles) southwest of Berlin's city center.The area was formed from a series of large moraines left after the last glacial period. Today, the city is three-quarters green space, with just a quarter as urban area. There are about 20 lakes and rivers in and around Potsdam, such as the Havel, the Griebnitzsee, Templiner See, Tiefer See, Jungfernsee, Teltowkanal, Heiliger Seeand the Sacrower See. The highest point is the 114-metre (374 ft) high Kleiner Ravensberg.
The Potsdam City Palace (German: Potsdamer Stadtschloss) was a historical building in Potsdam, Germany. The baroque palace was constructed on the site of an earlier fortification from 1662 to 1669 under Kurfürst Friedrich Wilhelm, and was rebuilt by Georg Wenzeslaus von Knobelsdorff under Friedrich II from 1744 to 1752, who performed additional interior decoration. It stood as one of the most important examples of Frederician Rococo.
