Encarnación is the capital city of the Paraguayan department of Itapúa, located at the south-east of the department, on the right-hand (western) shore of the Paraná River, opposite Posadas, ArgentinaEncarnación is connected to the Argentine city of Posadas by the San Roque González de Santa Cruz Bridge. The city is located on Route 1, some 370 km (225 miles) from Asunción, and located on Route 6, some 280 km (175 miles) from Ciudad del Este.
The San Roque González de Santa Cruz Bridge, is a 2,550 metres (8,366 ft) long cable-stayed bridge that crosses the Paraná River between the cities of Posadas, capital of Misiones ProvinceArgentina and Encarnación, Paraguay, capital of the Paraguayan department of Itapúa. The main bridge is 570 metres (1,870 ft) long and the approaching viaduct is 1,595 metres (5,233 ft) long.
The bridge was first projected in 1977 through an agreement between the governments of Argentina and Paraguay, as a compensation to Paraguay for the flooding of part of its territory by the Yacyretá Dam. Its construction began in 1981 and was planned to last three years, but was finished only in 1990. It was construct by a consortium leading by the Italian company Impregilo
