Tajikistan - Dushanbe

Dushanbe (TajikДушанбе) is the capital and largest city of Tajikistan, situated in the western part of the country near the border with Uzbekistan. Dushanbe means "Monday" in the Tajik language It was so named because it grew from a village that originally had a popular market on Mondays. Until 1929, the city was known in Russian as Dyushambe (RussianДюшамбе), and from 1929 to 1961 as Stalinabad (TajikСталинобод).

The National Library of Tajikistan was officially opened in 2012. A nine-storey building with a total space of 45.000m² and containing approximately 10 million books is the largest library in Central Asia. The imposing white edifice is situated in the centre of the city and is yet another expression of the gigantomania of the Tajik government of the last years. Among other huge projects of the country is also the region's largest teahouse and the world's biggest flagpole (165m), unveiled in 2011.
