Iraq - Baghdad

Baghdad is the capital of the Republic of Iraq, as well as the coterminous Baghdad ProvinceLocated along the Tigris River, the city was founded in the 8th century and became the capital of the Abbasid CaliphateThe city is located on a vast plain bisected by the River Tigris. The Tigris splits Baghdad in half, with the eastern half being called 'Risafa' and the Western half known as 'Karkh'. The land on which the city is built is almost entirely flat and low-lying, being of alluvial origin due to the periodic large floods which have occurred on the river.
The Imām 'Alī Holy Shrine (Arabicحرم الإمام علي‎), also known as Masjid Ali or the Mosque of 'Alī, located in NajafIraq, is the third holiest site for some of the estimated 200 million followers of the Shia branch of Islam. 'Alī ibn Abī Tālib, the cousin of Muhammad, the first Imam (Shia belief) is buried here, and the fourth caliph. According toShi'a belief buried next to Ali within this mosque are the remains of Adam and Noah. Each year millions of pilgrims visit the Shrine and pay tribute to Imam Ali.The shrine was first built by the Buyid shahanshah 'Adud al-Dawla in 977 over the tomb of Ali.









The Al-‘Abbās Mosque or Masjid al-‘Abbās (Arabicمسجد الامام العباس‎) is the mausoleum of ‘Abbās ibn ‘Alī, located across from the Imām Husayn Mosque in KarbalāIraqEmperors and kings of various dynasties have offered valuable gifts and gems to the shrine of ‘Abbās. In 1622 Abbas Shah Safavi ordered the decoration of the grave's dome. He built a window around the grave and organized the precinct.









The Great Mosque of Samarra is a 9th-century mosque located in SamarraIraq. The mosque was commissioned in 848 and completed in 851 by the Abbasidcaliph Al-Mutawakkil who reigned (in Samarra) from 847 until 861.









The al-Shaheed Monument (Arabicنُصب الشهيد‎), also known as the Martyr's Memorial, is a monument in the Iraqi capital Baghdad dedicated to the Iraqi soldiers who died in the Iran-Iraq war. The Monument was opened in 1983, and was designed by the Iraqi architect Saman Kamal and the Iraqi sculptor and artist Ismail Fattah al-Turk. During the 1970s and 1980s,
