Assen is a municipality and a city in the northeastern Netherlands, and is the capital of the province of Drenthe. It received city rights in 1809.
The Joseph Church stands in the center of Assen. It is called "Water Church", named after the period in which the Ministry of Water and Public Works was responsible for the building of churches, and dates from 1848. The building in the typical classicist style has retained much of its original form and is in good condition.
